Un cariotipo è il numero e l'aspetto dei cromosomi nel nucleo di una cellula eucariota. Il termine viene utilizzato anche per l'insieme completo di cromosomi in una specie o in un organismo individuale. I cariotipi descrivono il numero di cromosomi e ciò che sembrano sotto un microscopio leggero. Si presti attenzione alla loro lunghezza, alla posizione dei centrometri, alla modellazione, alle differenze tra i cromosomi sessuali e ad ogni altra caratteristica fisica. La preparazione e lo studio dei cariotipi fa parte della citogenetica.
