kerogen
Kerogen è una miscela di composti chimici organici che costituiscono una parte della materia organica in rocce sedimentarie. È insolubile nei solventi organici normali a causa dell'elevato peso molecolare dei suoi composti. La porzione solubile è nota come bitume. Quando riscaldate alle giuste temperature nella crosta terrestre, alcuni tipi di cherogenina rilasciano il greggio o il gas naturale, collettivamente noti come idrocarburi. Quando tali cherogeni sono presenti in alta concentrazione nelle rocce come lo scisto formano possibili rocce di origine. Le paludi ricche di cherogeni che non sono state riscaldate ad una temperatura più calda per liberare i loro idrocarburi possono formare depositi di scisto di olio. Il nome "kerogen" è stato introdotto dal chimico organico scozzese Alexander Crum Brown nel 1906.
