I corpi al ketone sono tre biochimici idrosolubili che vengono prodotti dal fegato dagli acidi grassi durante i periodi di assunzione di cibo basso o limitazione di carboidrati per le cellule del corpo da utilizzare come energia anziché al glucosio. Due dei tre sono usati come fonte di energia nel cuore e nel cervello mentre il terzo è un prodotto di degradazione di acido acetoacetico. Il tracciamento radioattivo dell'acetone determina che tra il 2% e il 30% viene escreto dall'organismo. I corpi del ketone sono raccolti dalle cellule e convertiti in acetil-CoA che entrano poi nel ciclo dell'acido citrico e nella catena di trasporto di elettroni per l'energia. Nel cervello, anche i corpi di ketone vengono utilizzati per produrre acetil-CoA in acidi grassi a catena lunga, perché gli acidi grassi a catena lunga non possono passare attraverso la barriera ematica. Il fegato rompe le proteine per produrre glucosio durante la fame per le poche cellule obbligatorie di glucosio che non possono utilizzare i chetoni. Nel cervello i corpi di chetoni sono una fonte vitale di energia durante il digiuno o l'esercizio fisico. Pur denominati "corpi", sono molecole, non particelle. I tre corpi chetogeni endogeni sono acetone, acido acetoacetico e acido beta-idrossibutirrico.
