Una cellula T citotossica è un linfocita T che uccide cellule tumorali, cellule infette, o cellule che sono danneggiate in altri modi. La maggior parte delle cellule T citotossiche esprimono recettori delle cellule T che possono riconoscere un antigene specifico. Un antigene è una molecola capace di stimolare una risposta immunitaria ed è spesso prodotta da cellule tumorali o virus. Gli antigeni all'interno di una cellula sono legati alle molecole MHC di classe I e portate alla superficie della cellula dalla molecola MHC di classe I, dove possono essere riconosciute dalla cellula T. Se il TCR è specifico per quel antigene, si lega al complesso della molecola MHC di classe I e l'antigene e la cellula T distrugge la cellula. Affinché il TCR si leghi alla molecola MHC di classe I, il primo deve essere accompagnato da una glicoproteina chiamata CD8, che si lega alla parte costante della molecola MHC di classe I. Di conseguenza, queste cellule T sono chiamate cellule CD8 + T. L'affinità tra CD8 e la molecola MHC mantiene la cella TC e la cellula bersaglio legata strettamente insieme durante l'attivazione specifica dell'antigene.

A cytotoxic T cell is a T lymphocyte that kills cancer cells, cells that are infected, or cells that are damaged in other ways. Most cytotoxic T cells express T-cell receptors that can recognize a specific antigen. An antigen is a molecule capable of stimulating an immune response, and is often produced by cancer cells or viruses. Antigens inside a cell are bound to class I MHC molecules, and brought to the surface of the cell by the class I MHC molecule, where they can be recognized by the T cell. If the TCR is specific for that antigen, it binds to the complex of the class I MHC molecule and the antigen and the T cell destroys the cell. In order for the TCR to bind to the class I MHC molecule, the former must be accompanied by a glycoprotein called CD8, which binds to the constant portion of the class I MHC molecule. Therefore, these T cells are called CD8+ T cells. The affinity between CD8 and the MHC molecule keeps the TC cell and the target cell bound closely together during antigen-specific activation.
