L'ingegneria della conoscenza è stata definita nel 1983 da Edward Feigenbaum e Pamela McCorduck, come segue: KE è una disciplina di ingegneria che prevede l'integrazione di conoscenze nei sistemi informatici per risolvere problemi complessi che richiedono normalmente un elevato livello di competenza umana. Viene utilizzato in molti settori informatici come l'intelligenza artificiale, inclusi database, data mining, bioinformatica, sistemi esperti, sistemi di supporto decisionale e sistemi di informazioni geografiche. L'ingegneria della conoscenza è anche legata alla logica matematica, nonché fortemente coinvolta nella scienza cognitiva e nell'ingegneria socio-cognitiva dove la conoscenza viene prodotta da aggregati socio-cognitivi e viene strutturata secondo la nostra comprensione di come il ragionamento umano e la logica funzionano.
