La fessura longitudinale separa il cervello umano in due distinti emisferi cerebrali, collegati dal callosum corpus. Gli emisferi mostrano una forte, ma non completa, simmetria bilaterale sia nella struttura che nella funzione. Per esempio, strutturalmente, il solco laterale è generalmente più lungo nell'emisfero sinistro che nell'emisfero destro, e funzionalmente, l'area di Broca e l'area di Wernicke si trovano nell'emisfero cerebrale sinistro per circa il 95% dei giusti, ma circa il 70% mancini. Generalizzazioni generali sono spesso fatte nella psicologia popolare da un lato o dall'altra con etichette caratteristiche, come "logiche" per il lato sinistro o "creative" per il diritto. Queste etichette non sono supportate da studi sulla lateralizzazione, poiché la lateralizzazione non aggiunge un uso specifico da entrambi gli emisferi.
