Un albero a sbalzo è un albero intermedio all'interno di un cambio che porta ingranaggi, ma non trasferisce l'azionamento principale del cambio dentro o fuori dal cambio. I pozzetti sono meglio conosciuti grazie al loro utilizzo in camper auto, dove erano una parte onnipresente del layout della trazione posteriore. Con il passaggio all'azionamento a trazione anteriore, l'utilizzo di alberi a sbalzo è ora più raro. L''albero motore' porta l'alimentazione di ingresso nel cambio. L''albero azionato' è l'albero di uscita dal cambio. Negli scambiatori di carrozzeria con alberi di tenuta, questi due alberi emergono da estremità opposte del cambio, che è conveniente per le auto RWD, ma può essere uno svantaggio per altri layout. Per i riduttori in generale, i gruppi di trasmissione montati su un albero a sbalzo possono svolgersi liberamente su un albero fisso o possono essere parte di un albero che poi ruota nei cuscinetti. Ci possono essere più clusters separati su un albero condiviso e questi sono permessi di girarsi liberamente l'uno rispetto all'altro.
