La leptina
Leptina, "ormone della sazietà", è un ormone prodotto da cellule adipose che regola la quantità di grasso immagazzinato nel corpo. Lo fa modificando sia la sensazione della fame, sia adeguando le spese energetiche. La fame è inibita quando la quantità di grasso memorizzata raggiunge un certo livello. La leptina viene quindi secreta e circola attraverso il corpo, eventualmente attivando recettori di leptina nel nucleo arcuato dell'ipotalamo. La spesa energetica è aumentata sia dal segnale al cervello, sia direttamente attraverso i recettori di leptina su obiettivi periferici. L'effetto della leptina è opposto a quello della ghrelin, "l'ormone della fame". I recettori di grelina sono sulle stesse cellule del cervello come i recettori di leptina, per cui queste cellule ricevono sete di concorrenza e segnali di fame. Leptina e grelina, insieme a molti altri ormoni, partecipano al complesso processo di homeostasi di energia. Sebbene la regolazione dei depositi di grasso sia considerata la funzione primaria del leptina, essa svolge anche un ruolo in altri processi fisiologici, come dimostra i suoi siti multipli di sintesi diversi dalle cellule adipose e le cellule multiple a fianco di cellule ipotalamiche con recettori leptinici .
