Il liberalismo è una filosofia politica o una visione del mondo fondata sulle idee di libertà e uguaglianza. I liberali sostengono una vasta gamma di opinioni a seconda della loro comprensione di questi principi, ma in genere sostengono idee come elezioni libere e giuste, diritti civili, libertà di stampa, libertà di religione, libero scambio e proprietà privata. Il liberalismo divenne per la prima volta un movimento politico distinto durante l'età dell'illuminismo, quando divenne popolare tra i filosofi e gli economisti del mondo occidentale. I liberali si sono opposti al conservatorismo tradizionale e hanno cercato di sostituire l'assolutismo nel governo con la democrazia rappresentativa e lo stato di diritto.
