Magnetizzazione
Nell'elettromagnetismo classico, la magnetizzazione o la polarizzazione magnetica è il campo vettoriale che esprime la densità di momenti magnetici permanenti o indotti in un materiale magnetico. L'origine dei momenti magnetici responsabili della magnetizzazione può essere sia delle correnti elettriche microscopiche che risultano dal moto degli elettroni negli atomi, o la rotazione degli elettroni o dei nuclei. La magnetizzazione netta risulta dalla risposta di un materiale ad un campo magnetico esterno, insieme a tutti i momenti di dipolo magnetico non bilanciati che possono essere inerenti al materiale stesso; Per esempio, nei ferromagneti. La magnetizzazione non è sempre omogenea all'interno di un corpo, ma varia in diversi punti. La magnetizzazione descrive anche come un materiale risponde ad un campo magnetico applicato, così come il modo in cui il materiale cambia il campo magnetico e può essere utilizzato per calcolare le forze che risultano da quelle interazioni. Può essere paragonato alla polarizzazione elettrica, che è la misura della corrispondente risposta di un materiale ad un campo elettrico nell'elettrostatica. I fisici e gli ingegneri definiscono la magnetizzazione come quantità di momento magnetico per unità di volume.
