"L'origine principale del managerialismo è il movimento di relazioni umane che ha preso la radice presso la Harvard Business School negli anni '20 e '30 sotto la guida del professor Elton Mayo. Mayo, un immigrato australiano, ha visto la democrazia divisiva e priva di spirito comunitario "Ha guardato i dirigenti aziendali per ripristinare l'armonia sociale che credeva che le esperienze di allontanamento dell'immigrazione e dell'industrializzazione avessero distrutto e che la democrazia era incapace di riparare".
