Discaria toumatou, Matagouri, è una pianta endemica alla Nuova Zelanda. Un nome alternativo ma disuso per la pianta è Wild Irishman. Il nome matagouri è come gli altoparlanti dell'inglese hanno ascoltato la pronuncia dell'isola sud del nome Māori "matakoura". Matagouri è un arbusto ramificato, estremamente spinoso o piccolo albero fino a cinque metri di altezza. Ha piccole foglie di cuoio vicino alle spine, che sono solo abbondanti in primavera, o l'ombra. I fiori sono piccoli e bianchi senza petali. È più comune nei prati del tussock, nelle zone pietrificate e nei lati del fiume. È comune nell'isola del sud orientale e si trova occasionalmente nell'Isola del Nord, a sud del fiume Waikato. Come per altre specie Discaria, viene risolto l'azoto dall'atmosfera con l'aiuto di batteri simbiotici del genere Frankia nelle sue radici. Come pianta nativa ha una protezione completa sulla terra di conservazione pubblica e un grado di protezione su terreni privati ai sensi della legge sulla gestione delle risorse. In un caso notevole, una superficie di 400 ettari di foresta di matagouri, compresi gli alberi che avrebbero potuto essere di 150 anni, è stata spruzzata illegalmente alla testa del Lago Sumner nel 2001.
