È circa uguale alla pressione atmosferica sulla Terra al livello del mare, e dal 1982 l'IUPAC ha raccomandato che lo standard per la pressione atmosferica dovrebbe Essere armonizzato a 100.000 Pa = 1 bar ≈ 750.0616827 Torr. La stessa definizione viene utilizzata nel settore dei compressori e delle utensili pneumatici. Il bar e il millibar sono stati introdotti dal meteorologo britannico William Napier Shaw nel 1909, mentre era direttore dell'Ufficio meteorologico di Londra. Le unità derivate dal bar sono il megabar, il kilobar, il decibar, il centibar e il millibar. Queste non sono unità SI o cgs, ma sono accettate dal BIPM per l'utilizzo con la SI. Il bar è legalmente riconosciuto nei paesi dell'Unione Europea. L'unità barra è considerata deprecata da alcune entità. Mentre il BIPM lo comprende sotto la classe "Unità non SI accettate per l'utilizzo con la SI", NIST lo inserisce nell'elenco delle unità da evitare e raccomanda invece l'utilizzo di kilopascali e megapascali.
