Modulazione
Nell'elettronica e nelle telecomunicazioni, la modulazione è il processo di variazione di una o più proprietà di una forma d'onda periodica, chiamata segnale di carrier, con un segnale modulante che contiene tipicamente informazioni da trasmettere. Nelle telecomunicazioni, la modulazione è il processo di convogliamento di un segnale di messaggio, ad esempio un flusso di bit digitale o un segnale audio analogico, all'interno di un altro segnale che può essere trasmesso fisicamente. La modulazione di una forma d'onda sinusoidale trasforma un segnale di una banda di base in un segnale a banda passante. Un modulatore è un dispositivo che effettua la modulazione. Un demodulatore è un dispositivo che esegue la demodulazione, l'inverso della modulazione. Un modem può eseguire entrambe le operazioni. Lo scopo della modulazione digitale è quello di trasferire un flusso di bit digitale su un canale analogico a banda passante, ad esempio attraverso la rete telefonica pubblica commutata o su una banda radiofrequenziale limitata. Lo scopo della modulazione analogica è quello di trasferire un segnale analogico a banda base, ad esempio un segnale audio o un segnale TV, su un canale analogico a banda analogica ad una frequenza diversa, ad esempio su una banda di frequenza radio limitata o un canale di rete TV via cavo.
