Le lingue austroasiatiche, nelle ultime classificazioni sinonimo di Mon-Khmer, sono una grande famiglia di lingua continentale dell'Asia sudorientale, anche sparsi in tutta l'India, Bangladesh e il confine meridionale della Cina. Il nome austroasiatico deriva dalle parole latine per "sud" e "Asia", dunque "Sud dell'Asia". Tra queste lingue, solo Khmer, Vietnamita e Mon hanno una storia registrata di lunga data e solo i vietnamiti ei Khmer hanno uno status ufficiale. Il resto delle lingue è parlato da gruppi di minoranza. L'etnologo identifica 168 lingue austroasiatiche. Queste formano tredici famiglie consolidate, tradizionalmente raggruppate in due, come Mon-Khmer e Munda. Tuttavia, una recente classificazione pone tre gruppi mentre un altro abbia abbandonato Mon-Khmer come un taxon, rendendolo sinonimo di una famiglia più grande. I linguaggi austroasiatici hanno una distribuzione disgiunta in tutta l'India, Bangladesh e Sud-Est asiatico, separate da regioni in cui vengono parlate altre lingue.
