La morfogenesi è il processo biologico che provoca un organismo a sviluppare la sua forma. È uno dei tre aspetti fondamentali della biologia dello sviluppo insieme al controllo della crescita cellulare e della differenziazione cellulare. Il processo controlla la distribuzione spaziale organizzata delle cellule durante lo sviluppo embrionale di un organismo. La morfogenesi può avvenire anche in un organismo maturo, nella coltura cellulare o all'interno di masse di cellule tumorali. La morfogenesi descrive anche lo sviluppo di forme di vita unicellulare che non hanno una fase embrionale nel loro ciclo di vita, o descrive l'evoluzione di una struttura corporea all'interno di un gruppo tassonomico. Le reazioni morfogenetiche possono essere indotte negli organismi da ormoni, da sostanze chimiche ambientali che vanno dalle sostanze prodotte da altri organismi a sostanze chimiche tossiche o radionuclidi rilasciati come inquinanti e altre piante o da sollecitazioni meccaniche indotte da pattern spaziali delle cellule.
