Sistema multipartitico
Un sistema multipartitico è un sistema in cui molteplici partiti politici hanno la capacità di ottenere il controllo degli uffici governativi, separatamente o in coalizione. Un esempio di tale coalizione è quello tra l'Unione Democratica-Democratica di Germania e il Partito Socialdemocratico istituito dopo le elezioni federali del 2013. Il numero effettivo di partiti in un sistema multipartitico è normalmente maggiore di due ma inferiore a dieci. Nella grande maggioranza dei sistemi multipartitici, numerosi partiti politici importanti e minori hanno una grave possibilità di ricevere l'ufficio e, perché tutti competono, la maggioranza non può controllare il legislatore, costringendo la creazione di una coalizione. In alcuni paesi, ogni governo mai formato dalla sua indipendenza è stato per mezzo di una coalizione. I sistemi multipartitici tendono ad essere più comuni nei sistemi parlamentari rispetto ai sistemi presidenziali e molto più comuni nei paesi che utilizzano la rappresentazione proporzionale rispetto ai paesi che utilizzano prima delle elezioni postali.
