Nel calcolo, il multitasking è un metodo in cui vengono eseguite più operazioni nello stesso periodo di tempo - vengono eseguite contemporaneamente invece che in sequenza. Le attività condividono risorse di elaborazione comuni, come una CPU e una memoria principale. Il multitasking non significa necessariamente che più attività eseguano esattamente nello stesso istante. In altre parole, il multitasking non implica parallelismo, ma significa che più di un compito può essere part-way attraverso l'esecuzione allo stesso tempo e più di un compito sta avanzando in un determinato periodo di tempo. Nel caso di un computer con una singola CPU, si dice che sia in esecuzione un solo task in qualsiasi momento, il che significa che la CPU sta eseguendo attivamente istruzioni per tale attività. Il multitasking risolve il problema programmando quale attività può essere quella in esecuzione in un determinato momento e quando un altro compito di attesa diventa un turno. L'azione di riassegnare una CPU da un'attività a un'altra è chiamata interruttore di contesto. Quando gli interruttori di contesto si verificano abbastanza frequentemente, viene raggiunta l'illusione del parallelismo.
