L'assicurazione nazionale nel Regno Unito è un sistema di contributi versati dai lavoratori e dai datori di lavoro verso il costo di alcuni benefici pubblici. Fu inizialmente un sistema contributivo di assicurazione contro la malattia e la disoccupazione, e successivamente anche la pensione di vecchiaia e altri benefici. È stato introdotto per la prima volta dalla legge nazionale di assicurazione 1911, ampliata dal governo laburista nel 1948 ed è stata oggetto di numerosi emendamenti negli anni successivi. La componente contributiva del sistema, "Contributi assicurativi nazionali", versati dai dipendenti e dai datori di lavoro sui guadagni e dai datori di lavoro su determinati benefici a favore dei dipendenti. I lavoratori autonomi contribuiscono in parte da un pagamento fisso settimanale o mensile e in parte da una percentuale di utili netti al di sopra di una determinata soglia. Gli individui possono anche effettuare contributi volontari, al fine di colmare un divario nel registro dei loro contributi e proteggere così il loro diritto alle prestazioni. I contributi sono raccolti da HM Revenue and Customs attraverso il sistema PAYE, insieme all'imposta sul reddito e sui rimborsi dei prestiti agli studenti.
