La selezione naturale è il processo graduale in cui i tratti biologici diventano più o meno comuni in una popolazione in funzione dell'effetto di tratti ereditati sul successo differenziale riproduttivo degli organismi che interagiscono con il loro ambiente. È un meccanismo chiave dell'evoluzione. Il termine "selezione naturale" è stato diffuso da Charles Darwin che intendeva essere paragonato alla selezione artificiale, ora più comunemente denominata allevamento selettivo. Variazione esiste in tutte le popolazioni di organismi. Ciò avviene in parte perché le mutazioni casuali si verificano nel genoma di un organismo individuale e queste mutazioni possono essere passate alla prole. Gli individui con alcune varianti del tratto possono sopravvivere e riprodurre più di individui con altre varianti di meno successo. Pertanto la popolazione si evolve. Sono importanti anche i fattori che influenzano il successo riproduttivo, un problema che Charles Darwin ha sviluppato nelle sue idee sulla selezione sessuale.
