Necrosi
La necrosi è una forma di lesione cellulare che provoca la morte prematura delle cellule nel tessuto vivente per autolisi. La necrosi è causata da fattori esterni alla cellula o ai tessuti, come infezioni, tossine o traumi che ne derivano la digestione non regolamentata di componenti cellulari . Al contrario, l'apoptosi è una causa programmata e mirata naturalmente di morte cellulare. Mentre l'apoptosi spesso fornisce effetti benefici all'organismo, la necrosi è quasi sempre dannosa e può essere fatale. Le cellule che muoiono a causa della necrosi non seguono il percorso di trasduzione del segnale apoptotico ma vengono attivati diversi recettori che comportano la perdita dell'integrità della membrana cellulare e un rilascio incontrollato di prodotti di morte cellulare nello spazio intracellulare. Questo inizia nel tessuto circostante una risposta infiammatoria che impedisce ai fagociti vicini di localizzare ed eliminare le cellule morte per fagocitosi. Per questo motivo è spesso necessario rimuovere il tessuto necrotico chirurgicamente, una procedura nota come debridement. La necrosi non trattata comporta un accumulo di decomposizione di tessuti morti e detriti di cellule presso o vicino al sito della morte cellulare. Un esempio classico è il gangrena.
