Neogene
Il Neogene / niːɵdʒiːn / è un periodo e un sistema geologico della Commissione Internazionale sulla Stratigrafia Geologic Timescale che inizia 23,03 milioni di anni fa e termina 2,58 milioni di anni fa. Il secondo periodo dell'Era Cenozoica, segue il Periodo Paleogeno ed è seguito dal Periodo Quaternario. Il Neogene è suddiviso in due epoche, il precedente Miocene e il pliocenico successivo. Il Neogene copre circa 20 milioni di anni. Durante questo periodo, i mammiferi e gli uccelli continuavano ad evolversi in forme approssimativamente moderne, mentre altri gruppi di vita rimasero relativamente invariati. I primi ominidi, gli antenati degli esseri umani, sono comparsi in Africa. Si è verificato un certo movimento continentale, l'evento più significativo che è il collegamento dell'America del Nord e del Sud all'Indo di Panama, in ritardo nel Pliocene. Questo ha tagliato le calde correnti oceaniche dal Pacifico all'Oceano Atlantico, lasciando solo il flusso del Golfo per trasferire calore all'Oceano Artico. Il clima globale si raffredda notevolmente nel corso del Neogene, culminando in una serie di glacianze continentali nel Quaternario che segue.
