Un dispositivo di visione notturna è uno strumento ottico che consente di produrre immagini in livelli di luce che si avvicinano all'oscurità totale. Sono più utilizzati dalle agenzie militari e dalle forze dell'ordine, ma sono a disposizione degli utenti civili. Il termine si riferisce di solito ad un'unità completa, tra cui un tubo di intensificazione dell'immagine, un alloggiamento protettivo e generalmente resistente all'acqua e un certo tipo di sistema di montaggio. Molti NVD includono anche lenti sacrificali, illuminatori IR e lenti telescopiche. I dispositivi di visione notturna sono stati usati per la prima volta nella seconda guerra mondiale e sono stati utilizzati in maniera vasta durante la guerra del Vietnam. La tecnologia si è evoluta notevolmente dopo la loro introduzione, portando a diverse "generazioni" di apparecchiature per la visione notturna con un aumento delle prestazioni e un calo dei prezzi.
