Un nomogramma, chiamato anche un nomogramma, un grafico di allineamento o un abaco, è un dispositivo di calcolo grafico, un diagramma bidimensionale progettato per consentire il calcolo grafico approssimativo di una funzione. Il campo della nomografia è stato inventato nel 1884 dall'ingegnere francese Philbert Maurice d'Ocagne e ha usato ampiamente per molti anni per fornire agli ingegneri rapidi calcoli grafici di formule complicate a una precisione pratica. I nomogrammi usano un sistema di coordinate parallele inventato d 'Ocagne piuttosto che le coordinate cartesiane standard. Un nomogramma è costituito da un insieme di scale n, una per ogni variabile in un'equazione. Conoscendo i valori delle variabili n-1, si può trovare il valore della variabile sconosciuta, o fissando i valori di alcune variabili, si può studiare la relazione tra quelle non fisse. Il risultato viene ottenuto ponendo un retino sui valori noti sulle scale e leggendo il valore sconosciuto da dove attraversa la scala per quella variabile. La linea virtuale o disegnata creata dal retino è chiamata linea di indice o isopleth.
