Un oncogene è un gene che ha il potenziale per causare il cancro. Nelle cellule tumorali, sono spesso mutate o espresse ad alti livelli. La maggior parte delle cellule normali subisce una forma di morte programmata. Gli oncogeni attivati possono causare le cellule designate per l'apoptosi per sopravvivere e proliferare invece.
