Orkney
Orkney, conosciuta anche come le isole Orkney, è un arcipelago nel nord della Scozia, a 16 chilometri a nord della costa di Caithness. Orkney comprende circa 70 isole, di cui 20 abitate. L'isola più grande, conosciuta come la "terraferma", ha una superficie di 523,25 chilometri quadrati, rendendola la sesta più grande isola scozzese e la decima isola più grande delle isole britanniche. Il più grande centro di insediamento e amministrazione è Kirkwall. Il nome "Orkney" risale al I secolo aC o prima, e le isole sono state abitate da almeno 8.500 anni. Originariamente occupata da tribù mesolitiche e neolitiche e poi dai pittori, Orkney fu invaso e forzatamente congiunto dalla Norvegia nel 875 e stabilito dal norvegese. Il Parlamento scozzese poi riattaccò l'orecchio alla corona scozzese nel 1472, a seguito del mancato pagamento di una dote per la sposa di James III, Margaret of Denmark. Orkney contiene alcuni dei siti neolitici più antichi e meglio conservati in Europa, e il "Cuore del Neolithic Orkney" è un sito dichiarato patrimonio dell'umanità dall'UNESCO.
