I pazienti che beneficiano di un'ortesi possono avere una condizione come spina bifida o paralisi cerebrale, o hanno subito un lesione del midollo spinale o ictus. Allo stesso modo, le ortesi vengono talvolta utilizzate in modo profilattico o per ottimizzare le prestazioni nello sport.
