Panda gigante
Il panda, noto anche come orso panda o il panda gigante per distinguerlo dal panda rosso non correlato, è un orso nativo della Cina centrale sud. È facilmente riconoscibile dalle ampie e straordinarie macchie nere intorno ai suoi occhi, oltre le orecchie e in tutto il corpo rotondo. Anche se appartiene all'ordine Carnivora, la dieta del panda è più di 99% di bambù. Pandas in natura occasionalmente mangiano altre erbe, tuberi selvatici o addirittura carne sotto forma di uccelli, roditori o carogne. In cattività possono ricevere miele, uova, pesce, gelati, foglie di arbusti, arance o banane insieme a prodotti preparati appositamente. Il panda gigante vive in alcune catene montuose della Cina centrale, soprattutto nella provincia di Sichuan, ma anche nelle province di Shaanxi e Gansu. A causa dell'allevamento, della deforestazione e di altri sviluppi, il panda è stato spinto dalle zone pianure dove una volta ha vissuto. Il panda è una specie in pericolo di conservazione. Una relazione del 2007 mostra 239 pandas che vivono in cattività all'interno della Cina e altri 27 fuori del paese.
