Nella matematica, in particolare la teoria degli ordini, un insieme parzialmente ordinato formalizza e generalizza il concetto intuitivo di un ordine, sequenziamento o disposizione degli elementi di un set. Un poset è costituito da un set insieme ad una relazione binaria che indica che per alcune coppie di elementi del set, uno degli elementi precede l'altro. Tale rapporto è chiamato un ordine parziale per riflettere il fatto che non tutte le parti di elementi devono essere correlate: per alcune coppie, può essere che nessun elemento precede l'altro nel poset. Così, gli ordini parziali generalizzano gli ordini totali più familiari, in cui ogni coppia è correlata. Un posetto finito può essere visualizzato attraverso il suo diagramma Hasse, che descrive la relazione di ordinazione. Un esempio familiare di un insieme parzialmente ordinato è una raccolta di persone ordinate per discendenza genealogica. Alcune coppie di persone sopportano il rapporto discendente-antenato, ma altre coppie non hanno alcuna relazione.
