In una miscela di gas, ogni gas ha una pressione parziale che è la pressione ipotetica di quel gas se solo ha occupato il volume della miscela alla stessa temperatura. I gas dissolvono, diffondono e reagiscono secondo le loro pressioni parziali e non secondo le loro concentrazioni in miscele di gas o liquidi. Questa proprietà generale dei gas è anche vero per le reazioni chimiche dei gas nella biologia. Ad esempio, la quantità necessaria di ossigeno per la respirazione umana e la quantità che è tossica, è impostata dalla pressione parziale di ossigeno da solo.
