Moto Brownian
Movimento o pedesi Brownian è il movimento casuale di particelle sospese in un fluido provocato dalla loro collisione con gli atomi rapidi o le molecole del gas o del liquido. Il termine "moto Brownian" può anche riferirsi al modello matematico utilizzato per descrivere tali movimenti casuali, spesso chiamato teoria delle particelle. Questo fenomeno di trasporto è chiamato dal botanico Robert Brown. Nel 1827, guardando attraverso un microscopio a particelle trovate nei granuli pollinici in acqua, osservò che le particelle si muovevano attraverso l'acqua ma non erano in grado di determinare i meccanismi che causavano questo movimento. Gli atomi e le molecole erano per lungo tempo teorizzati come costituenti della materia e molti decenni più tardi Albert Einstein pubblicò un foglio nel 1905 che spiegava in dettaglio come il movimento che Brown aveva osservato era il risultato del polline spostato dalle singole molecole d'acqua. Questa spiegazione del moto Brownian funge da conferma definitiva che gli atomi e le molecole esistono in realtà e sono stati ulteriormente verificati sperimentalmente da Jean Perrin nel 1908. Perrin è stato premiato nel 1926 con il premio Nobel per la fisica "per il suo lavoro sulla struttura discontinua della materia".
