Un pendentive della cupola principale di Hagia Sophia Un pendentive è un dispositivo costruttivo che consente di posizionare una cupola circolare su una stanza quadrata o una cupola ellittica su una stanza rettangolare. I pendenti, che sono segmenti triangolari di una sfera, congiungono punti in basso e si diffondono in alto per stabilire la base circolare o ellittica continua necessaria per la cupola. Nella muratura i pendenti ricevono così il peso della cupola, concentrandoli ai quattro angoli dove possono essere accolti dai moli sottostanti. Prima dello sviluppo del pendentive, era stato impiegato il dispositivo di corbelling o l'uso dello squinch negli angoli di una stanza. I pendenti erano comunemente usati nelle chiese ortodosse, rinascimentali e barocche, con un tamburo con finestre spesso inserite tra i pendenti e la cupola. La prima sperimentazione con i pendenti è stata fatta nella costruzione della cupola romana, iniziata nel II-III secolo dC, mentre il pieno sviluppo della forma è stato raggiunto nell'Hagia Sophia romana orientale del VI secolo a Costantinopoli.
