L'anemia pernizzante è uno dei tanti tipi della famiglia più grande di anemie megaloblastiche. L'anemia perniciosa può svilupparsi da una perdita di cellule parietali gastriche, che sono responsabili, in parte, per la secrezione di fattore intrinseco, una proteina essenziale per il successivo assorbimento di vitamina B12 nel ileo. La perdita di capacità di assorbire la vitamina B12 è la causa più comune di carenza di B12 adulta.
