I Perseids / pɜrsiːɨdz / sono una prolifica doccia meteora associata alla cometa Swift-Tuttle. Le Perseidi sono cosiddette perché il punto da cui sembrano venire, chiamato radiante, è nella costellazione Perseo. Il nome deriva in parte dalla parola Perseides, un termine trovato nella mitologia greca riferendosi ai figli di Perseo. Il flusso di detriti è chiamato la nuvola Perseid e si estende lungo l'orbita della cometa Swift-Tuttle. La nube è costituita da particelle espulse dalla cometa in viaggio durante la sua orbita di 133 anni. La maggior parte delle particelle sono state parte della nuvola per circa mille anni. C'è anche un filamento relativamente giovane di polvere nel torrente che è stato tirato fuori dalla cometa nel 1865, che può dare un primo picco minuto il giorno prima della doccia massima. Le prime informazioni su questa doccia di meteora si trovano negli annali cinesi nel 36 dC. Tuttavia il credito per riconoscere l'aspetto annuale della doccia è dato a Adolphe Quetelet che ha riferito nel 1835 che c'era una doccia che emana dalla costellazione Perseo. Alcuni cattolici si riferiscono ai Perseidi come "lacrime di San Lorenzo", dal 10 agosto è la data del martirio di quel santo.
