La fotogrammetria è un metodo scientifico stimativo che mira a recuperare le posizioni esatte ei percorsi di movimento dei punti di riferimento designati situati su qualsiasi oggetto in movimento, sui suoi componenti e nell'ambiente immediatamente adiacente. La fotogrammetria utilizza immagini ad alta velocità e metodi precisi di rilevamento remoto al fine di rilevare, misurare e registrare complessi campi di movimento 2-D e 3-D. La fotogrammetria alimenta le misurazioni dal telerilevamento e dai risultati dell'analisi di immagini in modelli computazionali nel tentativo di stimare successivamente, con una precisione crescente, i movimenti relativi effettivi 3-D all'interno del campo ricercato. Le sue applicazioni includono il monitoraggio satellitare delle relative alterazioni di posizionamento in tutti gli ambienti terrestri, la ricerca sul nuoto di pesci, di uccelli o di insetti, di altri processi relativi di movimento.
