Alcune piante possono prendere silice nel terreno, dopo di che viene depositato all'interno di diverse strutture intracellulari e extracellulari dell'impianto. Dopo che queste piante decadono, la silice viene ripopolata nel suolo sotto forma di fitoliti, rigidi, strutture microscopiche di diverse dimensioni e forme.
