Un pigmento è un materiale che modifica il colore della luce riflessa o trasmessa come risultato dell'assorbimento selettivo della lunghezza d'onda. Questo processo fisico differisce dalla fluorescenza, dalla fosforescenza e da altre forme di luminescenza, in cui un materiale emette luce. I pigmenti fuggiti si dissolvono nel tempo, o con l'esposizione alla luce, mentre alcuni alla fine si anneriscono. I pigmenti sono usati per colorare vernice, inchiostro, plastica, tessuto, cosmetici, alimenti e altri materiali. La maggior parte dei pigmenti utilizzati nella produzione e nelle arti visive sono coloranti secchi, di solito macinati in una polvere fine.
