Le Polygonaceae sono una famiglia di piante da fiore conosciute in modo informale come la famiglia di nozze o la famiglia degli zucchini a grano saraceno negli Stati Uniti. Il nome è basato sul genere Polygonum ed è stato utilizzato per la prima volta da Antoine Laurent de Jussieu nel 1789 nel suo libro, Genera Plantarum. Il nome si riferisce ai molti nodi gonfie i fusti di alcune specie. È derivato dal greco; Poli significa molti e goni significa ginocchio o giunto. Le Polygonaceae comprendono circa 1200 specie distribuite in circa 50 generi. I generi più grandi sono Eriogonum (240 specie), Rumex (200 specie), Coccoloba (120 specie), Persicaria (100 specie) e Calligonum (80 specie). La famiglia è presente in tutto il mondo, ma è più diversa nella zona temperata del nord. Diverse specie vengono coltivate come ornamenti. Alcune specie di Triplaris forniscono legname. Viene consumato il frutto dell'uva di mare (Coccoloba uvifera), e in Florida la gelatina viene fatta e commercializzata. I semi di due specie di Fagopyrum, noto come grano saraceno (sarrasin in francese), conferiscono il grano (la sua farina scura è conosciuta come blé noir (frumento nero) in Francia).
