Il post-strutturalismo è un'etichetta formulata dagli accademici americani per denunciare le opere eterogenei di una serie di filosofi francesi e continentali del mid-20th secolo e teorici critici che sono venuti a rivincita internazionale negli anni '60 e '70. Un tema importante del poststrutturalismo è l'instabilità delle scienze umane, a causa della complessità degli esseri umani e dell'impossibilità di scappare completamente le strutture per studiarle. Il post-strutturalismo è una risposta allo strutturalismo. Il strutturalismo è un movimento intellettuale sviluppato in Europa dal primo alla metà del XX secolo. Ha sostenuto che la cultura umana può essere compresa mediante una struttura-modellata sul linguaggio - che è diversa dalla realtà concreta e dalle idee astratte - un "terzo ordine" che media tra i due. Gli autori post-strutturalistici presentano diverse critiche di strutturalismo, ma temi comuni includono il rifiuto dell'autosufficienza delle strutture che lo strutturalismo posiziona e l'interrogazione delle opposizioni binarie che costituiscono quelle strutture.
