I denti premolari, o bicuspidi, sono denti transitoriali situati tra il dente del cane e quello molare. Nell'uomo ci sono due premolari per ogni quadrante nella serie permanente dei denti, facendo in totale otto premolari. Hanno almeno due cuspidi. I premolari possono essere considerati come un "dente transitorio" durante la masticazione o la masticazione. Ha proprietà di entrambi i canini anteriori e molari posteriori, e quindi il cibo può essere trasferito dai canini ai premolari e, infine, ai molari per la macinazione, anziché direttamente dai canini ai molari. I premolari negli esseri umani sono il primo premolare maxillare, il secondo premolare maxillare, il primo premolare mandibolare e il secondo premolare mandibolare. I denti molari per definizione sono denti permanenti distali ai canini, preceduti da pre-colui decidui. Nei primitivi mammiferi placentari ci sono quattro premolari per quadrante. I più mesiali due sono stati persi in Catarrhines. I paleontologi si riferiscono ai premolari umani come Pm3 e Pm4.
