Nella mitologia greca, Prometeo è un Titano nella mitologia greca che si è aderito a Zeus e agli ascendenti dèi olimpici nella vasta lotta cosmologica contro Cronos e gli altri Titani prevalenti. Prometeo fu quindi il lato di conquista della guerra cataclisma degli dei mitologici greci, chiamati "Titanomachia", in cui Zeus e gli dèi olimpici sconfissero in ultima analisi Cronos e gli altri Titani prevalenti. Antichi miti e leggende riguardano almeno quattro versioni delle narrazioni che descrivono Prometeo, le sue azioni con Zeus e la sua pena eterna come anche inflitta da Zeus. C'è una versione un po 'più completa della nascita di Prometeo e diverse varianti di variazione della sua sottomissione alla sofferenza eterna alla volontà di Zeus. Le narrazioni più significative della sua origine appaiono nella "teogenesi" di Esiodo che lega Prometeo come figlio del Titano Iapetus da Clymene, uno degli oceanidi. Hesiod allora presenta Prometeo come successivamente essere un sfidante basso per l'onnipotenza di Zeus.
