Prophase
Prophase, dall'antico greco πρό e φάσις, è uno stadio di mitosi in cui la cromatina si condensa in doppie strutture a forma di bastoncino chiamate cromosomi in cui la cromatina diventa visibile. Questo processo, chiamato condensazione cromatica, è coinvolto nel complesso condensino. Poiché il materiale genetico è stato replicato nella prima interfaccia del ciclo cellulare, ci sono due copie identiche di ciascun cromosoma nella cellula. Queste copie sono chiamate cromatidi della sorella e sono collegate tra loro in un elemento del DNA presente in ogni cromosoma chiamato centromere. Anche durante la fase profonda, la colorazione giemsa può essere applicata per generare G-banding nei cromosomi. Un organo importante nella mitosi è il centrosome, il centro di organizzazione del microtubulo in metazo. Durante la fase profonda, i due centrosomi, che replicano indipendentemente dalla mitosi, hanno aumentato l'attività del microtubulo a causa dell'assunzione di γ-tubulina. I centrosomi saranno spinti separatamente alle estremità opposte del nucleo cellulare mediante l'azione di motori molecolari che agiscono sui microtubuli. Fondamentalmente, la cromatina nel nucleo si avvolge nei cromosomi.
