Il protestantesimo è un movimento religioso che comprende forme di fede cristiana e prassi che hanno origine da dottrine e religiosi, politici e impulsi ecclesiologici della Riforma Protestante, contro quelli che consideravano gli errori della Chiesa cattolica. Il termine si riferisce alla lettera di protesta dei principi luterani contro la decisione della dieta di Speyer nel 1529, che ha ribadito l'editto della dieta dei vermi che condanna gli insegnamenti di Martin Lutero come eresia. Il movimento protestante ha origine nella Germania attuale e viene considerato popolarmente iniziato nel 1517 quando Luther pubblicò le Ninety-Five Theses come reazione contro le dottrine e le pratiche medievali, in particolare per quanto riguarda la salvezza, la giustificazione e l'ecclesiologia.
