La psicosurgia, chiamata anche neurochirurgia per disturbi mentali, è il trattamento neurochirurgico del disturbo mentale. La psicosurgia è da sempre un campo medico controverso. La storia moderna della psicosurgia inizia nel 1880 sotto lo psichiatra svizzero Gottlieb Burckhardt. Il primo significativo incursione nella psicosurgia nel ventesimo secolo è stato condotto dal neurologo portoghese Egas Moniz che durante la metà degli anni '30 ha sviluppato l'operazione nota come leucotomia. La pratica è stata consacrata con entusiasmo negli Stati Uniti dal neuropsichiatra Walter Freeman e dal neurochirurgo James W. Watts che ha ideato quello che è diventato la procedura prefrontale standard e ha chiamato la loro tecnica operativa lobotomia, anche se l'operazione è stata chiamata leucotomia nel Regno Unito. Nonostante l'assegnazione del premio Nobel a Moniz nel 1949, l'uso della psicosurgia è diminuito negli anni '50. Negli anni '70 il tipo di operazione standard di Freeman-Watts era molto raro, ma altre forme di psicosurgia, anche se utilizzate su scala molto più piccola, sono sopravvissute.
