I pirogeni sono micro-scompartimenti subcellulari presenti nei cloroplasti di molte alghe e in un unico gruppo di piante terrestri, le hornworts. I pirenidi sono associati all'operazione di un meccanismo di concentrazione del carbonio. La loro funzione principale è quella di agire come centri di fissazione dell'anidride carbonica, generando e mantenendo un ambiente ricco di CO2 intorno all'enzima fotosintetica ribulosa-1,5-bisfosfato carbossilasi / ossigenasi. Pyrideidi sembrano quindi avere un ruolo analogo a quello dei carbossimali nei cianobatteri. Le alghe sono limitate ad ambienti acquosi, anche negli habitat terrestri, e ciò ha implicazioni per la loro capacità di accedere alla CO2 per la fotosintesi. La CO2 diffonde 10.000 volte più lentamente d'acqua rispetto all'aria, ed è anche lenta per equilibrare. Il risultato di questo è che l'acqua, come un mezzo, è spesso facilmente esaurita di CO2 e è lento a guadagnare CO2 dall'aria. Infine, la CO2 si equilibra con il bicarbonato quando si scioglie nell'acqua, e lo fa su base pH-dipendente. Per esempio nell'acqua di mare il pH è tale che il carbonio inorganico disciolto si trova principalmente sotto forma di HCO3-.
