I Giochi Pythian erano uno dei quattro Giochi Panhelleni della Grecia antica, un precursore dei Giochi Olimpici Moderni, che si tiene ogni quattro anni nel santuario di Apollo a Delphi. Sono stati tenuti in onore di Apollo due anni dopo ogni Giochi Olimpici, e tra i Giochi Nemei e Isthmiani. Furono fondati nel VI secolo aC e, a differenza dei Giochi Olimpici, furono anche concorsi per l'arte e la danza. I concorsi di arte e danza pre-datarono la parte atletica dei giochi, e si diceva che fosse stato avviato da Apollo dopo aver ucciso Python e fondato l'oracolo di Delphi. Altrimenti, gli eventi atletici erano gli stessi dei Giochi Olimpici. Una corsa di carro a quattro cavalli si è tenuta in un ippodromo nella pianura, non lontano dal mare, nel luogo in cui si trovava lo stadio originale. Secondo Ovidio, negli anni formativi della crescita dopo il diluvio, la madre terra produsse accidentalmente un gigantesco Python che terrorizzava gli esseri umani. Apollo lo ha ucciso con successo, anche se richiedeva quasi tutte le frecce della sua quarta. Per assicurarsi che nessuno si dimenticasse di questa azione eroica, ha creato i giochi pythi per commemorare la sua vittoria.
