Nella botanica, la radice è la prima parte di una piantina che emerge dal seme durante il processo di germinazione. La radice è la radice embrionale della pianta e cresce verso il basso nel terreno. Sopra la radice è il gambo embrionale o l'ipocotile, sostenendo il cotiledone. È la radice embrionale all'interno del seme. È la prima cosa che emerge da un seme e giù in terra per consentire al seme di succhiare l'acqua e di mandare le foglie in modo che possa iniziare la fotosintesi. Coloro che puntano lontano dalla cicatrice del seme o dal hilum sono classificati come antitropici e quelli che puntano verso l'hilum sono sintetici. Se la radichetta comincia a decadere, la pianta subisce un smorzamento preemergente. Questa malattia appare sulla radice come macchie oscure. Alla fine, provoca la morte della piantina. Il plumule è il colpo sonno. Cresce dopo la radichetta. Nel 1880 Charles Darwin pubblicò un libro sulle piante che aveva studiato, The Power of Movement in Plants, dove menziona la radice.
