Decadimento radioattivo
Il decadimento radioattivo, noto anche come decadimento nucleare o radioattività, è il processo attraverso il quale un nucleo di un atomo instabile perde energia emettendo radiazioni ionizzanti. Un materiale che emette spontaneamente questo tipo di radiazione - che include l'emissione di particelle alfa, particelle beta e raggi gamma - è considerato radioattivo. Il decadimento radioattivo è un processo stocastico a livello di atomi singoli, in quanto, secondo la teoria quantistica, è impossibile prevedere quando un determinato atomo decadrà. Tuttavia, la probabilità che un determinato atomo decadrà è costante nel tempo. Per un gran numero di atomi, la velocità di decadimento per la raccolta è calcolabile dalle costanti di decadimento misurate dei nuclidi. Ci sono molti diversi tipi di decadimento radioattivo. Un decadimento o perdita di energia si traduce quando un atomo con un tipo di nucleo chiamato radionuclide genitore si trasforma in un atomo con un nucleo in uno stato diverso o in un nucleo diverso contenente diversi numeri di protoni e neutroni. Ognuno di questi prodotti viene chiamato nuclide figlia.
