Jean-Philippe Rameau
Jean-Philippe Rameau è stato uno dei più importanti teatri e compositori francesi dell'era barocca. Ha sostituito Jean-Baptiste Lully come compositore dominante dell'opera francese ed è anche considerato il principale compositore francese per il clavicembalo del suo tempo, accanto a François Couperin. Non si sa poco sui primi anni di Rameau, e fino al 1720 venne fama come un importante teorico della musica con il suo trattato sull'armonia. E anche negli anni successivi come compositore di capolavori per il clavicembalo, che circola in tutta Europa. Era quasi 50 anni prima di intraprendere la carriera d'opera in cui oggi la sua reputazione poggia principalmente. Il suo debutto, Hippolyte et Aricie, ha provocato un grande moto e fu attaccato violentemente per il suo uso rivoluzionario di armonia dai sostenitori dello stile di musica di Lully. Ciononostante, la preminenza di Rameau nel campo dell'opera francese è stata presto riconosciuta e fu poi attaccato come compositore "di stabilimento" da parte di chi ha favorito l'opera italiana durante la controversia nota come Querelle des Bouffons negli anni '50.
