Nella probabilità e nelle statistiche, una variabile casuale, una variabile aleatoria o una variabile stocastica è una variabile il cui valore è soggetto a variazioni dovute alla probabilità. 391 Una variabile casuale può assumere un insieme di possibili valori diversi, ciascuno con una probabilità associata o una probabilità Funzione di densità, contrariamente ad altre variabili matematiche. I possibili valori di una variabile casuale potrebbero rappresentare i possibili risultati di un esperimento ancora da eseguire o i possibili risultati di un esperimento passato il cui valore già esistente è incerto. Possono anche rappresentare concettualmente i risultati di un processo "casualmente" oggettivo, o la "casualità" soggettiva che risulta dalla conoscenza incompleta di una quantità. Il significato delle probabilità assegnate ai valori potenziali di una variabile casuale non fa parte della teoria della probabilità stessa, ma si riferisce invece a argomenti filosofici sull'interpretazione della probabilità. La matematica funziona lo stesso indipendentemente dalla particolare interpretazione in uso. La funzione matematica che descrive i possibili valori di una variabile casuale e le relative probabilità associate è conosciuta come una distribuzione di probabilità.
